MPs’ salaries to rise 1.5%

Members of parliament will get a rise of nearly £1,000 in their basic salary from 1 April, increasing their pay to £65,737 a year.

A more generous pay rise was recommended by Bill Cockburn, the chair of the senior salaries review body (SSRB), as part of the annual review of public sector salaries. The SSRB recommended an increase of 2.1% on average, which was rejected by the Government with an increase of 1.5% imposed instead.

The intended salary rise is underway, said a spokesperson from the House of Commons, though it hasn’t gone through yet.

Last year’s review saw MPs’ salaries rise by 2.3%.
