Maryland-based healthcare organisation Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) has increased its minimum rate of pay from $13 (£9.97) an hour to $15 (£11.51) an hour.

The pay increase, effective from 20 January 2019, will benefit approximately 1,100 of the organisation’s 4,850 employees.

Julie McGovern, vice president and chief human resources officer at AAMC, said: “An investment in our workforce is an investment in the vitality of our health system. We’ve been working towards this move for the past two years.

“We believe in caring for our caregivers, which creates a positive workplace but also a great place to receive care, as every employee plays a vital role in the care of our patients and their families.”

AAMC’s new pay rate exceeds the US’ federal minimum wage of $7.25 (£5.56) an hour as well as Maryland’s statutory minimum wage of $10.10 (£7.75) an hour.

McGovern added: “Increasing the minimum wage demonstrates our commitment to our employees, their families and our patients. It’s a reflection of our organisation’s dedication to being the best place to work in healthcare.”
