Bain and Company tops workplace rankings for culture and leadership

Management consultancy Bain and Company is the organisation with the best workplace culture and leadership in the UK, according to research by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and website Glassdoor.

Bain and Company topped the ‘Leadership and culture at work top 20’ rankings, based on analysis of the reviews posted on Glassdoor by current and former employees of more than 7,000 organisations in the UK. The consultancy scored a 99% ‘recommend to a friend’ rating.

Barney Hamilton, chief talent officer at Bain and Company, said the employer’s recruitment process is designed to find “exciting recruits with a passion for making an impact”, estimating that up to 80% of the organisation is involved in the evaluation and assessment process.

In second place was recruitment agency Investigo, which allows employees to manage their own time rather than setting core hours. Third was Gateshead-based Northern Gas and Power, where team members can finish work for the year once they have hit their annual target.

Rob Wall, head of policy at CMI, said: “The CMI/Glassdoor top 20 showcases [organisations] with the best management and working cultures in the UK. At a time when trust in business is at an all-time low, good management and leadership is more important than ever to build inclusive and inspiring cultures that enhance productivity and promote employee engagement and wellbeing.”

Big-name organisations ranking in the top 20 were Facebook, in ninth, Anglian Water, in 13th, and Salesforce, in 19th.

Joe Wiggins, head of corporate communications, EMEA at Glassdoor, said: “The business benefits of putting employees first are now proven. Investing in culture and leadership is mission-critical for all companies.

“What is really interesting is the huge diversity in [organisations] we see as pioneers when it comes to leadership style. Some of these employers are huge multinationals, others are far smaller, national firms and, in industry terms, the CMI/Glassdoor top 20 features everything from tech and energy to consulting and social enterprise.”
