More than a million employees donated to charity through a workplace payroll-giving scheme in 2012/13, according to revised figures by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The figures have been revised due to a change in data collection and also in the data systems of some payroll-giving agencies.
The figures show that donations to charity directly from pay have risen by £37 million to £155 million, rather than by the £6 million previously reported in June 2013.
The figures also show that the number of employees donating via a payroll-giving scheme topped the one-million mark for the first time, with 1,022,000 employees donating from pay in the financial year 2012-13, up from 735,000 employees the previous year.
Peter O’Hara, managing director of Workplace Giving UK, said: “This news is a great start to the new year and we’re thrilled that these revised figures published by HMRC in late December 2013 show such a marked increase in monies raised and participation levels of payroll giving.”
Payroll giving is something that we actively promote although must admit I was surprised to find that most schemes are not as transparent as they seem and that there is a charge to the receiving charity…..
I advise to shop around if you are looking to implement as there are a couple of completely charge free schemes available.
