Bullingberg implements a fatigue management plan to support mental wellbeing

Two years ago, male cosmetics brand Bullingberg implemented a plan to address the issue of fatigue and improve the mental wellbeing of its 11 employees.

HR manager Georgina Rodrigez says: “We see a direct correlation between the finalisation of a big project or a tight deadline and a dip immediately afterwards in productivity levels and general office atmosphere.

“Our staff work very hard on a number of projects, which can be draining mentally; therefore, recharging the batteries, preventing stress and improving sleep quality is critical.”

Among the initiatives used by Bullingberg to combat fatigue are monthly wellbeing and mindfulness classes, which were first introduced during wellbeing week in February 2018. These are compulsory for all members of staff, regardless of seniority.

The sessions include tips on how to get a better night’s sleep, such as setting up a bedtime routine, ensuring the optimal temperature and light and avoiding mobile phones or electronics before bed. The wellbeing and mindfulness classes also offer advice on lowering stress levels.

Rodrigez says: “Staff hadn’t directly asked for this initiative; however, through personal conversations, observations and quarterly meetings, it became obvious that some staff members struggle with getting enough sleep, are tired after working on projects or tight deadlines, or were unaware of some of the factors that cause either sleep deprivation or stress. The sessions have proven very popular.”

Making the most of the size of the organisation, Rodrigez is able to take a personalised approach to supporting employees with their workload and mental health. She has built a culture of communication within Bullingberg, conducting a short weekly meeting with each team member to check in and discuss how their experience might be improved.

“We have a small team and a very open office, and our employees are encouraged to speak openly and honestly with me,” Rodrigez concludes.
