Self-parking chairs steer into place in Japanese offices

Chair-SFTW-2016Something for the weekend…

Nissan has developed a self-parking office chair, perfect for employees with no time to spare for rearranging the furniture after each meeting or at the end of a long, hard day.

The ‘intelligent parking chair’ was created in collaboration with creative team Birdman and inspired by the vehicle manufacturer’s ‘intelligent park assist’ technology.

The chair automatically moves back into position using a combination of wireless technology and an in-built roller; cameras placed in the corner of the room create a bird’s-eye view to locate the chair’s position and calculate its route back to its original location.

According to Nissan, ‘with this new technology, Japanese businessmen are now freed from the troublesome task of arranging chairs’.

The Employee Benefits team is wondering whether these chairs could be a valuable time-saving mechanism or if they would better serve as an employee engagement tool. A game of automated musical chairs, anyone…?
