Health Shield donates a healthy sum to Beating Bowel Cancer UK

Charitable employees at Health Shield — a health cash plan provider — have donated more than £8,000 to Beating Bowel Cancer UK after a year of fundraising events in aid of the national charity.

Staff raised more than £4,000 in 2013, which Health Shield has matched — resulting in a total contribution by the Friendly Society of £8,008 to the charity. In total, more than £16,000 has been donated to Beating Bowel Cancer UK.

Rachel Thomas, community fundraiser for Beating Bowel Cancer’s North West division, was presented with a cheque for the full amount at Health Shield’s headquarters in Crewe, Cheshire.

In September, the Health Shield team participated in a triathlon, which saw 37 participants swim 500m, cycle 20km and run 5km. Other team members organised fundraising events such as cake sales and office dress-down days to show their support for the cause. A number of employees also took part in ‘Decembeard’ — a new event organised by the charity.

Thomas said: ‘We’re delighted that Health Shield chose Beating Bowel Cancer as its charity of the year. Its generous donation will allow us, through our nurse hotline, to fund lifesaving research and provide support to those who are affected by bowel cancer in the UK and raise awareness of the symptoms of this disease.’

The charity was chosen by the Friendly Society in honour of Health Shield’s finance director — Maxine Wilson — who was diagnosed with bowel cancer and has been fighting the disease over the past 12 months.
