With the Christmas party season now well underway, by now, most employees will have been to at least one festive celebration.
But how many employees truly appreciate the investment their employer makes in seasonal events?
Research published this week by Wolters Kluwer’s UK pay and benefits specialists, Croner, found that 83% of businesses surveyed said they were holding a Christmas party this year. Of those that are hosting a celebration for staff, 87% are funding these at a typical cost of more than £25 per head.
Instead, 96% of the employees surveyed said they would rather receive a cash bonus instead of a party.
I can fully appreciate that the idea of a little extra cash at Christmas can seem very appealing. But it would be a real shame if staff didn’t take the opportunity to have some fun and relax with their colleagues, especially if it has been a busy year.
Such events offer great opportunities for team building and camaraderie away from the workplace. While larger company events give staff the chance to meet people from other departments, which can help to create a greater sense of unity within the business.
I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2015.

Every survey I’ve ever seen says “Give me cash” ahead of any other form of reward. The real question shouldn’t be what do employees want, but what does the employer wish to achieve. I’d suggest a good night out with colleagues and a thank you from the boss will contribute more to morale and be remembered long after the bonus has been spent on paying off a bill/buying petrol/reducing the overdraft! Cash is rarely the answer.
