Employee Benefits Awards 2013: Best healthcare and wellbeing benefits

Winner: Hewlett-Packard

Scheme: Fighting Cancer at HP

Entered by: HealthScreen UK

For this award, the judges were looking for a successful strategy that helps to boost productivity or engagement through employee wellbeing.

The judges were impressed with the steps Hewlett-Packard has taken to increase awareness of some of the most common cancers in the UK. Through education-based campaigns and screening initiatives, several cancers have been diagnosed in employees which would otherwise have gone undetected.

The scheme has also led to potential business benefits, including reduced absence costs and lower private medical insurance and income protection costs, plus savings on ill-health early retirement and life assurance.

The judges said: “The approach Hewlett-Packard took, in terms of the combination of screening and education, was impactful and gave a legacy to what it is doing. It was very different from the other entries – it fundamentally made a difference to employees’ lives.”

The winner said: “We stood out because we actually made a difference to our employees’ lives.”
