The coalition government will accelerate the increase in state pension age to 66 years.
It will also begin phasing out the default retirement age from April next year.
Charles Cotton, reward adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said: “It is no great surprise that the government is planning to accelerate the rise in the state retirement age.
“However, it is a shame that they have swerved a clear decision on the default retirement age, and have chosen instead to hold yet another consultation on its abolition. They should make their consultation swift, and move quickly to bring to an end the absurdity of enforced retirement.
“In tough times like these, it is all the more crazy to force people out of the labour market and into the pension claimant ranks. People who want and are able to keep working can do more to reduce the deficit than people forced out of work and into unwilling retirement.”

Well, after working 48 years when I reach 65 I look forward to receiving my State Pension at the promised 65 years of age (2016)..those that want to go on and drop dead at work can BUT I wish to enjoy a little bit of my life AND NOT A DAY LATER, THANK YOU!
If it is increased to age 66 in 2016 is this likely to have a “implementation” date of 6 April 2016 ?
This makes a big difference to me as I will be 65 in February 2016 !
WEF from when?? I am 65 in Sept 2011. Are the going to bomb me out until Sept 2012? Under that circumstance my wife who is 62 would also have to wait for her pension as she gets het state pension on me due to having paid a ‘married woman’s stamp. We are both treading water, financing ourselves after redundancy until the state pension kicks in. To wait another year is inconceivable!! But what would they care???????
If you are 65 in 2011 what are you worried about ?
This increase to age 66 for men will only happen in 2016 at the earliest.
I am being forced to retire by my employers on my 65th birthday -26 Nov 2010. I am currently employed as a job-share teacher of Mathematics in a secondary school in N Lanarkshire council. I hope the age default is scrapped as soon as possible, and before my birthday. I love my job, and still have a lot to give to it. I have appealed against the decision, and am currently awaiting a reply.
I request the Coalition Government to put an end to default retirement age. Abolition of default retirement age will give employees the choice to work as long as they are able to. Scrapping the default retirement age will be good for those who want to carry on working and good for the country as it will boost tax revenues and reduce welfare payments
