Sports Direct staff to share bonus worth £34 million

Sports Direct employees are to share five million shares worth around £34 million in September this year.

More than 3,000 of the retail giant’s 28,500 employees will benefit from the organisation’s performance targets being met since 2011.

The shares will potentially be equivalent to £11,400 each under the bonus scheme.

Sports Direct employees will also acrue a further 15 million shares vesting in 2017 under its scheme.

It was confirmed at its annual conference on 28 May, which was attended by 900 of its employees and partners.

Sports Direct had its 2015 bonus scheme approved by shareholders at its annual general meeting on 2 July 2014.

The scheme will award staff if conditional performance targets are all met, and 25% of any award would vest following the announcement of the organisation’s audited full year results in July 2019.

The organisation’s bonus arrangements have also paid out some £160 million worth of shares to 2,000 permanent employees in 2014, and more than £100 million to 2,000 employees in April 2013.

However, the organisation is facing a claim from nearly 300 employees that were not eligible to participate in its bonus scheme because they were on zero-hours contracts.

Sports Direct declined to comment.
