Poundland introduces first benefits package

Discount retailer Poundland is introducing its first benefits to help attract and retain staff.

So far, it has launched a childcare voucher scheme for its 4,500 employees. This is open to all staff, although some will not be able to take part as it will take their earnings below the national minimum wage.

The retailer is also in the process of finalising a bonus scheme and is awaiting board approval for a healthcare cash plan and a voluntary benefits scheme, both of which it hopes to launch by June.

Wendy Holmes, HR manager, said a project group is looking into the bonus plan, which will give monetary awards based on sales targets. “Some staff are paid monthly and others are paid weekly. For weekly-paid staff we would probably look at a monthly bonus, whereas for salaried staff it could be a quarterly bonus with a yearly target as well.”

The proposed cash plan will entail a minimum £1 weekly contribution, making it affordable for all staff. “What we are doing will be a real benefit to staff,” added Holmes.
